READ! CLOSURE OF BALAIA
BOWLING GREEN Owing to nearby building work that will affect the green, it is CLOSED for an indefinite period. There is also work taking place in the golf clubhouse, which we use. This will also be closed after Christmas for refurbishment. We have been told that closures will be until at least APRIL 2024 The club has made arrangements to play league matches at Valverde BC, near Almancil. Rollup days and times from January 2024 will be MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS meet at 10.00 for 10.30 start We shall be joining in with Valverde BC members. THE COST OF PLAYING AT VALVERDE IS THE SAME AS IT WAS AT BALAIA. FOR VALVERDE BC LOCATION MAP ETC PLEASE CLICK OR TAP HERE PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WOOD AND SHOE HIRE ARE NOT BE AVAILABLE AT VALVERDE. FLAT SOLED BOWLING SHOES ARE MANDATORY! Bowls Algarve Winter League 2023 - 2024The league is now under way with the final matches on Saturday 9th March. There will be no scheduled matches on December 16th, 23rd and 30th. There are ten teams in the league, a reduction from last season. Each team will play the others twice, home and away, a total of 18 matches.Fixtures, results and league table here. |

Bowls Algarve Inter Club competitions 2023 - 2024The competitions are now under way. All the information here.Pleased to report that Frances and Jill began the defence of their Open Pairs title with a 16 - 14 win down at Floresta over Kevin and Marilyn Ewington. Not such good news for our triples team, soundly beaten at Floresta. |

An excellent gathering, enjoyed by all, at Restaurante O
Lavrador near Boliqueime. A raffle raised €210 for our

That concluded our activities for 2023. The bowling season resumes
on 3rd January 2024. In the meantime, a Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year to you all.

It
started out a nice sunny morning. |

But
halfway through, the rains came.. |
The match was abandoned at half time, in effect. The
green was waterlogged after a very heavy shower, totally not in
the forecast. The match was resumed on 16th December, and we won!
Over the past couple of months, various members have
represented the Club at the Thursday afternoon quiz at the Arte
Bar. We have done reasonably well, but so far no winners! These
have now ceased for December, restarting early January. If you
think your brain can help us, watch this space. It's free. I will
confirm starting date and time (probably 11th January and probably
1600hrs) but do check back. No formalities, no need to do anything
but turn up 10 - 15 minutes before the start. it's table service
on the terrace (weather permitting) so no need to even move once
installed. Overall, lasts about 1hr 15 minutes.
We were told that things were going to happen, so we
played out last roll-up at Balaia on 15th November. Nothing has
happened! The shed was going to be demolished. Still there!
All our stuff has been removed. These pictures from this morning
also show the extent of the work taking place either side of the

Balaia v Barbourne BC (Worcester) Friday 3rd NovemberOur final game of the touring season was played under cloudy skies. Strange marks had appeared on the green. We conclude that these are caused by birds pecking at caterpillars and worms! The game was closer than the score suggests. Balaia won by 69 shots to 53, winning two rinks to one, with one tied. Unfortunately this game had to be
cancelled because of heavy rain, which turned torrential. About 3¼
inches (83mm) or rain fell during the day. Just a bit too wet!

Balaia v Dunstable Town BC Wednesday 18th OctoberIt was Dunstable Town's
turn to win a very close match on Wednesday. Weather was
quite a bit different to the previous Friday! Each side
won one of the first two rinks to finish, with the shot
scores being tied at 26-all. All eyes, at least those eyes
that hadn't rushed into the bar, were on rink 1 where the
two teams were slugging it out. The visitors held their
nerve, producing some fine shots in the last two ends and
won by two points, thus the final score was Balaia 40
Dunstable Town 42.

Another very hot morning and another
good game. A late rally by a couple of the Balaia rinks brought
the final score on shots to Balaia 66 Auriol Park 53. Two rinks
were tied, Balaia won two.

outgunned by the visitors by a shot score of 60 - 37 and by two

In September we said farewell to
former members Jean and Peter King. After 30 years in the Algarve,
they have sold up and are moving back to the UK. Both have become
very well known around the Algarve bowling scene. They will be
missed. We have a legacy in the form of the King's Cup, which will
be one of the trophies in club competitions in the years to come.
We at Balaia wish them all the best for the future.
The final games were played on a
very, very, hot Thursday morning 29th June at Valverde BC. We won
our final game 6 points to 4 and thus finished eighth of nine
teams. Final league tables etc here.
Congratulations to Valverde Vulcans, winners for the third successive time.
The club was pleased to host week 4 of the Bowls Algarve Summer League Cup on Thursday 26th May. A total of forty-eight bowlers representing eight teams enjoyed some very favourable conditions through the day. Best news of all was that Balaia won their match against Pedras Panthers 36 - 23, three sets to one with the one set lost being by a single point. Members of the Committee have undertaken urgent and
necessary repairs to the green surrounds. Members and visitors
have commented on how much better things look. These are temporary
repairs only. We are urging our landlords to make permanent
repairs before the touring side visits and winter competitions get
under way.

Victory in the Bowls Algarve Inter-Club Open pairs!Frances Reynolds and Jill Dunkey produced an outstanding performance to beat John London and Joe Scott of Pedras BC. On a cloudy and occasionally rainy morning at Alvor they came off 23 - 14 winners with one end to spare. A magnificent run of eight consecutive winning ends after having been 9 - 2 down after four ends paved the way. It was 19 - 9 after 12 ends, 21 - 10 after 15, a blip on end 16 brought the score to 21 -14 but an unlucky shot by the opponents on end 17 knocked the jack back to two of Balaia's and gave Frances and Jill the two shots they needed. It's our first Inter Club win in many years. |

An excellent day with 32 members and visitors bowling on a sunny morning to remember those no longer with us. Some very bad language, wrong biases and donations put €159.29 into the swear box, the spider contributed €44,50 (strange, since it was €1 to bowl) and some loose change found by Peter Moss down the back of the sofa added to a grand total of €201.41 raised on the day. This will be used to make purchases on behalf of the Olhos D´Água parish food bank.
Members and visitors turned out in large numbers for a
special rollup at the club. Red was the order of the day!
Afterwards, a member's lunch was held at the Wander Inn in
Albufeira. A raffle raised €250 for the Olhos D'Água foodbank.
Peter Moss won the 'spider' prize.
Thanks to Pauline and her helpers for all the hard work in getting
a successful day organised.

We have donated €1,010.70 to the official Portuguese fund for Ukranian war relief. This came about from various activities during the latter part of the year, including individual donations, raffles at various events and fines for wrong bias etc! A really nice thank you was received
